Living in Frugal Decadence

A Tip for Anyone Expecting to Claim the Homebuyer Tax Credit

Posted on | November 17, 2009 | No Comments

Do I have any readers looking to buy a home soon, or ones who have recently purchased a home? If you qualify for the Homebuyer’s Tax Credit, as Paul and I did, then I suggest that you claim it on your 2008 tax returns. In the rules, you are allowed to amend your 2008 tax return in order to get the credit now (it still takes up to 2 months to process) rather than wait to file your 2009 tax return.

Why do I suggest this? Well…turns out that Uncle Sam will pay you interest on the tax credit as if it had been owed to you last year! We earned $172 extra dollars by doing this. Sounds good to me!
