It’s Frugal Confessions Friday–Garage Sale Edition!!

Happy Friday Everyone!
Today I thought we’d do something a little differently. I was approached from the author of GarageSalesTracker website to publish a short post on garage sales. In honor of that, I’d love to hear about the best item or worst item you have ever found at a garage sale, and what you paid for it, or what it was on sale for (if you remember).
My Garage Sale Confession
The best item I bought at a garage sale was my magenta-colored reading chair for $10. Woohoo! The worst item I have ever seen on sale at a garage sale was used pillows…that were stained…with God knows what…I don’t even remember what they were on sale for, but trust me, they were not a bargain.
Leave a comment with your own great and horrible finds–I’d love to hear them. Happy Hunting everyone!

When the weekend hits, most non-frugalites start off by going to happy hour before hitting the stores to blow their entire paycheck on a spending spree.
Nowadays folks have to be a little bit more cautious as we have witnessed the un-witness able in the past year and a half. So how do we do that?
The weekend has turned into a bargain hunters dream. With garage sales flooding the market more so than ever before due to families fighting off foreclosures and all of the accumulated household items of the past few years are being offered for pennies on the dollar.
CNN just recently broke a story on recession busters and how a Midwest woman has turned her hobby of hitting the weekend yard sales into a career which profits her over a thousand dollars a month from buying valuable items at cheap prices and than re-selling them online. Here’s another story of a woman who supplements her income with purchasing things at garage sales and re-selling them.
If your mission isn’t to make money from these sales no need to worry the family can still benefit tremendously from large discounts on baby clothes, toys, books, electronics, antiques, and jewelry. No, matter what your need is there’s always a hidden treasure out there waiting for you.

when we got our first apartment out of college, Scott and I found a coffee table with 2 matching end tables for our living room. Not sure how much we paid, but I’m sure it wasn’t much. Almost 4 years later, we still use the end tables in our living room! We did get rid of the coffee table since one of the glass panels was cracked, although still functional (we gave it away for free on craigslist, and the people who picked it up looked like some college guys shopping for furniture, I’m glad its still being used!)

First of all…I totally want your magenta chair form my one day “reading nook” by the piano! Great find.
Unfortunately we struggle with extra money each month and like any other woman on this planet I like to shop and redecorate. Just this past October was our community’s annual yard/garage sale day. HUGE event! I needed to find some stuff to put on my walls in the “country” kitchen and my whatever decor living room. I stumbled upon a brand new in box Home Interiors frames and glass picture that would retail for $30+ and paid $2 for it!!! Everything that hangs on my kitchen walls was found in this manor as well. I have baskets hanging, barn stars, and other various country decor that I did not pay more than a dollar or two a piece for!

When our renters moved out of our rental house we discovered the woman was a “hoarder” and the house was in a shambles… long story short the lady left and my mother and I had a garage sale with all of the crap that she left.
WORST ITEM EVER… she left a couch that was horribly dirty and stained and just plain gross. I got the fun job of dragging it outside (which bc of her nasty dogs gave me a horrid case of ring worm).. The couch smelled like something died in it and was just plain awful. Not only did no one buy it (riiight), but when we put a free sign on it someone saw the free sign, decided he wanted it called a buddy with a truck to come get it… 30 minutes later they brought it back and put it back in the driveway…
I seriously think there was something like a dead rat in it or something… Ugh I just cringe thinking about that garage sale.

I don’t ever go to garage sales. I’ve always figured they were full of stuff like that couch Ruth was talking about or the pillows you mentioned.

Hey BluSky!
I wouldn’t write off garage sales; there are some great deals to be had. Think $0.25 books and $1.00 DVDs!
Have a great evening.
