Happy Friday Frugal Confessions Readers!!! If you are new to this series, here is the introduction.

Here is my confession:

Today, I am having a company come out and do a an energy improvement estimate for free…and I will also receive a free water heater blanket!!! I am very excited about this because we are on a huge campaign to make things more energy efficient (as is the rest of the country).

Update:  It’s installed! Check out below.

This is one of my old frugal tricks since I’m having trouble coming up with a new one:

When I get a collection of several old faded and stretched out t-shirts from everyone in the family, I spiral cut the shirts from the hem up in 1.5″ wide strips. I then crochet the strips into bathmats. They’re super absorbent and I don’t feel bad for filling up landfills with them. :-)

Wow–what a great idea Momma J!!! We certainly have our fair share of old tee-shirts. We use a few for rags…but admittedly, unless the others are good enough to donate, we throw them out. I’ll have to keep a stock pile.

    Happy Friday!

oooh you must let me know how the energy improvement estimate goes!

My confession is that I sometimes plan when I’m going to use the oven to bake bread or a pie based on the weather. So if its a really summer hot day, I’ll wait for a cooler day so I don’t heat up the house with the oven. Or if its a really cold day I go out of my way to think of things to bake that day to help heat up the house. This past weekend was unseasonably cold here in PA, so we enjoyed muffins in the morning and apple pie that evening!

That is a great way to use up the oven’s energy–cooking and heating! Thanks for your comment:).

A programmable thermostat is awesome! Our electricity bills plummetted when we programmed in our preferences and didn’t have to remember to turn the A/C on and off all the time!

We are fortunate that our house came with two programmable thermostats!!! And they are energy-star rated. We have not learned how to reset them, but the previous owners definitely have it almost to where we would like it as well. Let’s see what the energy guy says….

Hmmm, I turn the a/c off this time of year and throw the windows open and sleep with them that way too. Admittedly not the best idea for everyone but I’m armed and a light sleeper :)

Which company did this for you? I’d like to get in on that deal!

    Hello Kevin Whited!

The company is called Energy Improvements, and they are located in Texas. (http://energyimprovements.net/). Also, I used a coupon in my Valpak coupon mailer for the free water heater blanket, but the salesman said he was running a special right now and that was part of the promotion, so you might be able to just ask over the phone!
