Ever Thine, Ever Mine, Ever Ours…Tokens of Love at a Discount for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! While I feel that love should be expressed every day of the year, if there’s a day that is strictly set aside to think about, admire, and indulge in love, you can count me in. With a little imagination and a lot of thought, you can create a memorable day for you and your significant other at a very reasonable price.

  1. Lipstick on the Mirror: Grab some lipstick or lip gloss and leave a heart, kiss, or message for your beau.
  2. Magnet Message: Do you remember when magnetic poetry became super popular? Well, I still have a set. Grab your old set or purchase a new one, and leave messages on the refrigerator, mirror, or other metal surface for your sweet.
  3. Read to One Another: Reading to one another is a very calming, soothing experience. You can choose a children’s book, the bible, Harry Potter, poetry—the sky is the limit.
  4. Chocolate-Dipped Goodies: Anyone who has experienced dessert at a fondue restaurant quickly realizes that you can dip just about anything in chocolate: strawberries, rice krispy treats, marshmallows, bananas, pretzels, cheesecake, pound cake, etc. You don’t even need a fondue set; simply make a tray of dippable, cut-up foods, and make a fondue chocolate recipe in a pot over the stove. When you are ready to begin eating, take it off the stove and place it on top of an oven mitt or something that is insulated to help keep it melted (you may need to reheat depending on how long it takes you to gobble down the goodies).
  5. Homemade Truffles: I had never attempted to make my own truffles until this year because I figured they were way too difficult. To my surprise, I found a really easy and really tasty recipe that turned out amazing! There’s no baking involved. As a side note, I ended up not rolling them in the crushed candy canes, but just in the cocoa powder, and they were magnificent.
  6. Homemade Chocolate Body Paint: Try out Chef Curtis Stone’s recipe, or this recipe for chocolate body paint. Grab a soft brush from the craft store…and have fun.
  7. Jar of Memories: Grab a jar of some sort (clean out a mayonnaise or spaghetti sauce jar, or even an old box of Kleenex tissues), and label it your Jar of Memories (you can get really creative here with the decorating). Rip up small pieces of papers, and write down one memory of you and your significant other on each. Fold them and put them in the jar. Over some candlelight, and perhaps a glass of wine, take turns pulling out a new piece of paper and delighting in your memories together! You can also write down memories together and add them to the designated jar over the week leading up to Valentine’s Day.
  8. Elevated Home Movie Experience: Make your own gourmet popcorn by popping some over your stove, putting it in a bowl, and drizzling chocolate, caramel, or both over it. Light some candles, pick a great movie, and snuggle up.
  9. Cook Together: Choose a new dish to try out in the kitchen. Turn on some music, divide up the work, and just enjoy being together at a leisurely pace.
  10. Star Gazing: Take a look at the night sky online before heading outside (or snuggling up inside if it is freezing) and gazing into the sky.
  11. Couples’ Shirts: Oh yes…you can be “one of those couples” on Valentine’s Day. You can either make tee shirts from home (there are some startup costs with this), or use a service like Shutterfly (always search for online codes before purchasing). Find cheap tee shirts at the dollar store or a craft store (using coupons when you can).
  12. Special Photo Skins for Electronics: You can upload a photo of the two of you, or a place you visited, and create a skin for phones, laptops, and even gaming devices at Skinit.com!  These start at around $10.00.
  13. Serve an Interactive Meal: Something that will bring the two of you together and spice up the evening is choosing a meal that will engage you. This could be fondue, Asian fare with chopsticks, movie-themed food, make-your-own sundaes, and foods that you can cook together over an open fire.
  14. Roses Made from Hershey Kisses: This is a neat craft idea that looks pretty simple…and is definitely cheaper than a dozen roses.

Whatever you do this Valentine’s Day, enjoy the day, honor your significant other, and make sure you tell the ones that mean the most to you how you feel.

    I love the chocolate fondue idea – YUM! My mom was telling me that Rachael Ray is doing “waffles week” this week and yesterday she put brownie mix into a waffle maker for chocolate brownie muffins, another super yummy idea for chocolate lovers! we typically keep V-day low key by picking up dinner & dessert from one of our favorite Italian restaurants and renting a movie. Maybe this year I’ll do the fondue for dessert :)
