BluSky, It was exactly like the South Park Episode! I was on the phone with Amanda while they were making their pitch and that was the first thing that came to my mind!

Geez, this exhausted me just reading about your pitch experience! Before signing on the dotted line we decided to rent a timeshare a couple of times to get a first-hand look at what owning a timeshare might be like. Well, we decided that renting a timeshare is the best way to go. We use http://www.redweek.com because they have so many to choose from, and all over. We have more flexibility and it costs way less than if we had bought a timeshare. Plus we still get full use of the resort's amenities. Can't beat it!

Hello Crystal!
We actually got our 'gas gift card' all in one shot as an American Express gift card, so that was nice. Sounds like you still saved some money, but definitely a lot of hoops to go through in order to do so. Thanks for sharing!

Scott and I went to a timeshare presentation a few years ago, and they had the same pressure tactics. We have a policy of never making big purchase decisions on the spot because those kinds of "you must buy now" sales tactics just don't seem like they could ever be a good idea. At that time we were starting to look at buying a house soon, but when we told that reason to the salesperson they went into a big speech about how purchasing the timeshare would improve our credit to make buying a home easier! What a bunch of baloney. Go into debt so it will be easier to go into more debt later! Yeah right, no thanks :-)

It sounds like we went to the same timeshare 2 years ago :) Ours was out next to Lake Conroe...same 3 man pressure tactics and little cabin rooms that did not look to be worth $75 a night. Our "prizes" were $40 in free gas and the 3 day 2 night Vegas vacation.
Trick one was, we got the $40 in gas in 4 increments of $10 by mailing in a gas receipt every 30-45 days (hoops so people fail to use it). We got back our $40 :)
Second trick was the Vagas vacation. We mailed in the paperwork and waited a few weeks. Then we got a packet in the mail and mailed in more paperwork and a $100 refundable deposit and waited some more. Then we got contacted on the phone with an explanation of the trip options.
Option 1 was leaving on a Tuesday afternoon with a layover, staying in a hotel near the airport, and coming back on Thursday morning with a layover for the price of taxes (around $100). Option 2 was to leave on a Tuesday morning, stay at a mid-line hotel on the strip, and coming back on Thursday for the price of around $300. Or Option 3 was to book your own flights and get 2 free nights at a mid-line hotel and a coupon book for the price of taxes ($50).
We actually ended up going with Option 3 and Circus Circus and booking an extra night or two on Fremont Street (4 Queens)...overall we saved about $100-$150 off the regular flight/hotel combo to Vegas we usually booked. It took a lot of hoops, but we took advantage. We do not recommend Circus Circus.
I do not believe we will be going to any future timeshares...I rather have complete control over our future vacations and the deals we could find.

Way to go turning $100 into $150 (and it being free to begin with!). I truly wanted to sit at home and run the numbers before making such a huge purchase; I am not the sort to compulsively spend on the spot like that. However, they left such a bad taste in my mouth that I didn't care to afterwards anyway! Thanks for reading.
