Great advice! My hubby and I have a Home and Auto account with ING Direct just for stuff like this. :)

We fund the account with the car payments we no longer have to pay. For example, my car is paid off. We started making my $200 monthly car payment to our Home and Auto Account instead of a bank. When we pay off my husband's car, that $330 a month will start being paid to the Home and Auto account too.

We use this account for any unexpected home or car expenses as well as for downpayments on future cars. Hopefully it will be large enough by the time my 2005 Chevy Aveo gives out that I can buy my next car with cash. :)
