It’s Frugal Confessions Friday: Heinous Frugal Acts By Others Edition
Posted on | October 9, 2009 | 14 Comments
Hello Frugal Confessions Readers!
I thought it would be fun to confess other people’s shameful frugal acts that we’ve witnessed this week. This edition was inspired by the following woman:
Last week I went to Whole Foods to grab dinner in between work and a class I was taking. I was in the soup section (the butternut squash crab bisque is amazing!), where I witnessed a woman take the soup cup and fill it up with a soup, drink it down, and comment on how great it was. She then filled it up with another soup, and did the same thing!! Apparently she must have thought the soup was for the taking…(please note, I paid for mine:)). At the end (because I simply could not stop watching her–I had never seen anyone do this before), she simply left her used cup on the counter top and walked off!!
Please share with me any heinous frugal acts you have personally witnessed. Happy Friday everyone!

I went to lunch with a coworker one day and she did just about the same thing. Yes, they had a salad bar but no she didn’t pay for it. Still, she casually walked the whole thing up and down, trying some of this and then trying some of that until she came upon something she liked. Then she filled a bowl up and brought it back to the table! I was mortified and could not sink in my chair enough.

Hahaha–I felt about the same–and I didn’t even know her! I kept looking around like “is anyone seeing this? She’s not with me!”
thanks for your comment!

We were shopping at an Outlet center in Lancaster many years ago, when we (and several others) were approached by a man in the parking lot saying he had run out of gas and needed money to buy gas to get his family home…could anyone help? We didn’t…others did. As we pulled out, we noticed this same man and his family driving the car ahead of us, so we followed.
He seemed to have plenty of gas when he headed in the opposite direction of the gas station… and as he pulled into the ice cream shop down the street!

I saw a middle-aged man shoplift a bag of skittles out of Walmart and start running when I brought it up to the Walmart welcomer.
On a related note, is it theft to taste grapes before you buy them? I have been having this argument with different people over the last 10 years or so. I think it’s stealing.

I often taste a grape from every bunch of grapes I buy because until you taste them you can’t tell if they are sweet or sour. So sue me.

Dear Crystal,
Wow! I am glad you said something to somebody.
About the grape tasting; that one is tricky. Chefs normally always taste their food before they purchase it, but they also tend to purchase a lot at once. A lot of farmer’s markets also let you taste the produce before you purchase. I’ll have to think about that some more…

It’s theft unless the store has a policy of allowing it. Assuming no policy, it is retail theft (taking and carrying away of the property of another with the intent to permanently deprive). Consuming the grape permanently deprives the owner of the store of rightful possession of the grape.

Re: the grapes, I think if they are sold by weight it’s theft. If they are sold by the bunch, it’s just tacky.

Hey everyone!
Well we do have an official lawyer in the house–J.R., and so I think the votes are in favor of it being theft (unless there is a store policy–like possibly with restaurant/chef grocery stores where they taste before they buy).
Thanks for everyone’s comments!

Nothing burns me more than buying a three pound bunch of grapes at $3.99 a pound, and when you get them home, they all taste like vinegar. Yes, I’ll eat one at the store. But only one. I also open the egg carton to see if any are cracked; I peek at the bacon to see if it is all fat or has a fair amount of meat; and I’ll look at the sell-by date on the perishables before putting it in my cart. Shouldn’t we all?

Opening the egg carton, peeking at the bacon through the package, and looking at sell by dates doesn’t consume the item. If you buy bad grapes, most grocery stores will give you a full refund if you bring them back.

It has happened to me more than I can count on all digits –I take my grapes home and they taste like complete doo doo. So to not waste time, gas and money, I do pop a grape into my mouth before I buy it. I am sure you ask any store manager and they would prefer you try one grape before purchasing … returning items is a drag on both parties. By the way, one time I did pop the grape into my mouth, and my five year old said, “mommy, you have to pay for that before you can eat it.” Nice !!!

I don’t like buying grapes and driving 60 miles round trip to return them if they are not to my taste. As I consider grape tasting in the store to be illegal, I just don’t buy grapes. Sad because I like grapes. I cannot even tell you the last time I bought grapes it must be at least like 10 or more years ago.
