It’s Frugal Confessions Friday!!

Hello everyone! If you are new to this series, check out the intro here.
Here’s mine for the week:
Several years ago my car was backed into by a cement dump truck while at a stop sign. The cement company was located next to my place of work, and they asked me to come in and speak with them. They wanted to go around insurance instead of submitting a claim, so we got an estimate done on the cost of fixing my car, they cut me a check for $545, and I left with a smile! I never fixed the dent (the car is quite old and not worth it anyway). All in all, it was a good day for me! Turns out it was a great idea that I put the check into my savings…because a week later I was laid off.
Now share your stories, tips, and confessions! I would love to hear them.

Last year I was driving to work early in the morning before the sun came up. I had my lights on, turned my turn signal on, checked myself, and moved into a right lane to exit. Right on cue, another small car must have put on the gas and moved in as well since my right front bumper smacked into her left back door.
We pulled over and checked our cars…she had a small dent on her door and I couldn’t open my passenger door since the metal was smushed above the wheel well. We exchanged info but decided not to report it since we didn’t think it was bad enough. One of my friends pulled out my dent so my passenger door would open.
A week later, the lady called me saying that she was going to have her dent fixed for a few hundred dollars (implying I should pay up). I asked if she remembered if she had her lights or turn signal on that morning since I never saw her (and I had photos of when we pulled over…her lights were not on). She never called again.
It pays to pay attention to details…and to take cell phone pictures.
I could have probably got a small insurance settlement, but I hate wasting time and having more things on my to do list…oh well.

I am glad she didn’t pursue you further! I agree–sometimes things like that are not worth the hassle. Thanks for your confession!

Last week I came across a free downloadable knitting ebook. One of the patterns in the book is for a cover for a Swiffer or ReadyMop. Anyone who uses these mops knows how expensive the throw away pads are (and the guilt of filling up landfills!). Now I’ll be able to make my own washable/reusable pads and never have to buy them again. Here’s the crochet pattern w/ a link to a knit pattern: http://www.favecrafts.com/Kitchen-Crochet/Mop-or-Sweeper-Cover-Crochet-Pattern
Now…does anyone have a ‘recipe’ for a homemade floor cleaner?

Momma J–what an awesome find!! I have a swiffer as well, and always get the refills for free through the Drugstore Game (check out under my topics). But I must admit, having to throw away the pads so often is certainly an environmental waste. I’ll check it out! I also had a roommate who has able to take one of the swiffer bottles and fill it with her own cleaning solution (don’t know the recipe)…but I haven’t been able to figure out how to do that since.
Thanks for the confession!

My husband and I have been wanting to set up rain barrels almost as soon as we were homeowners. We love to garden and we’re also conscious of the environment, so it would work perfectly to water our vegetable garden during summer dry spells. But when we looked at the price of rain barrels, we had sticker shock to say the least ($100+)! Since we know there are many restaurants that order large amounts of peppers, olives, etc in 55 gallon barrels we thought there must be a place that had extra laying around that they were going to throw away. We called and emailed a number of places with no luck. But just today, after much patience and effort, I think we have finally found 50 gallon barrels (that held peppers) that will cost just $2 a piece (thank you craigslist)! I’ve found that you can get so many things at a great bargain if you just have the patience to look for it.

Aurora–wow that is a great find!! Not only was the ‘rain barrel’ really cheap, but it will save you in water costs for many years to come! Thanks for your comment.
