It’s Frugal Confessions Friday!!!

Posted on | September 18, 2009 | 10 Comments

Hello Frugal Confessions Readers!

Check out the intro to this series if you have never participated.

Here’s mine:

I pack my lunch practically every day of the week (ask my coworkers: it’s a rarity if I go out with them during the day!). In order to save money on plastic sandwich bags…I reuse the same ones for each lunch! Typically I pack the same lunch each week: this week it was a turkey and cheese sandwich, grapes, terra chips and a yogurt. So I used three fresh bags on Monday, and then repeated their use throughout the rest of the week! Granted, if the sandwich bag looks gross in anyway, I do throw it out occasionally mid-week because it is meat we’re talking about.

How about you? Share your stories here. I’d love to hear them!

Ok, so this one is slightly embarrassing, but that is what a true “confession” should be, right? :-) While flipping through the coupons from the Sunday paper, I’m sure you can relate to the excitement when you find a really high-value coupon that will save you a few dollars rather than the 50 cents or so that most coupons will get you. And while I have NO intention whatsoever of getting pregnant anytime too soon, sometimes when I see those coupons for like $4 off a pregnancy test my mind goes something like this “WOW, $4!! That is a great coupon! But wait, I really have no intention of getting pregnant, in fact if I could plan everything perfectly I would certainly rather wait for a little while longer. But on the other hand, life doesn’t always go as planned, and WHAT IF by some crazy chance I do need to purchase one of these tests in the next few months before this expires? Wouldn’t I rather be in that situation and still be able to save $4? But wait, if I clip the coupon will the universe somehow think I want to get pregnant and therefore raise my chances of it happening? No way, that is ridiculous – heck with that, I’m clipping the coupon and sticking it in the way back of my coupon organizer.”
HAHAHA! How’s that for a frugal confession?

I take my lunch to work every day, also. I reuse my sandwich bags, too. But, I wash them and let them air dry in the dish drying rack.

Aurora, FYI you can get pregnancy tests at the 99 Cent Store. I couldn’t believe it when I saw them there on the shelf next to check-out.

I reuse plastic containers and jars. For example, old margarine tubs become sandwich or pasta holders for lunch at work. Jars are great for storing spice mixes and homemade salad dressings.

Been bringing my lunch to work since I started working for health reasons. However, my tip is that I frequently borrow DVDs from the library. The Harris County Library system has a huge collection of DVDs, as well as old VHS tapes of things that may be no longer available.

    And they’re FREE.

Ingenue: Thanks for the tip! Perhaps I should wash mine as well:).

SJ: I’ve seen people use old mayonnaise jars and such and screw the lid under garage cabinets so that you can unscrew the jars and fill them with nails, screws, bolts, etc., then screw them back into place! Sounds like a fun idea.

Tyger: Great idea borrowing DVDs from the library. Keep reading!

    Thanks for the comments!

I’ve created a yahoo mail account just for mailing lists…that way I can take advantage of being on my favorite stores’ and restaurants’ mailing lists (great for discounts and coupons) without having to worry about junk mail clogging up my business or family email accounts. It’s worked great for more than 10 years!

If you have a discount theater in your area, you can take advantage and miss the annoying movie watchers by going directly after work or on the weekends before 3pm. I love our $1.50 theater (and it’s right next to my Big Lots), but it fills up with kids that have been dropped off or adults that think a $1.50 ticket means they can talk loudly the whole time…

Hi, i just found your blog, and it’s great!
I live in Houston as well! One thing I do is buy the Entertainment book.. It has great coupons, and the grocery coupons alone pay for the book. I also am a huge coupon clipper, and even have a binder with baseball card holders, so I can see every coupon on each sheet!

Hello Laurie! I am glad you found us.

The Entertainment Book is great–I have one also (I actually got it for free through a deal…hopefully can do the same for next year’s book!).

    Keep reading, and welcome!
