Frugal Confessions – Frugal Living

Hello Frugal Confessions Readers!

For those of you new to this series, check out the introduction here.

Here is my confession of the week:

I get the Houston Chronicle paper every Sunday for $1.75. At around 7:30 a.m. I grab a bowl of cereal, peruse a few sections, and dig into the coupons. What incredible deals I find!

Around April of this year I found an introductory offer of $20 for 20 weeks of Sunday papers delivered to my doorstep. I jumped on it; not only was it more convenient, but it was $0.75 less. My introductory offer finished up, and to my delight, they offered me 52 weeks of the Sunday paper for $52! I took it, calculating that I will be saving $39 over the next year. Woohoo!

What is your frugal confession of the week? I’d love to hear it!

That’s great! I also signed up for the Philadelphia Inquirer that way with a $1/paper offer, but unfortunately it went to regular price after the offer was over :-/ I paid for it for a while, but just recently I decided to cancel and try going without it for a little while and see how I do with just internet coupons and the coupons I can occasionally nab from my grandfather’s Inquirer. We’ll see how it goes!

My frugal confession this week is getting a pitch fork on craigslist for $13. New ones typically go for $30-40++ and since we don’t actually have a farm or urgent need for one, that just seemed like too much. We just wanted one for moving mulch and compost around our gardens, and $13 is definitely worth it! (and actually, she was selling for $15, we offered $10 and she counter-offered $13, haha! here’s to negotiating ;-) )

I pay $1.50 a week for the Thursday, Friday, and Sunday Chronicle – I cut a few coupons although I don’t play the major savings games you do. Congrats on awesome deals!

My frugal confession was lowering our Netflix membership from $18 for 3 at a time to $9 for 1 at a time and using the streaming feature to watch old shows when the mood strikes. I’m really into the X-Files right now. :-)

I make chicken salad and tuna salad a lot so we go through Miracle Whip kinda quickly in my household :) I was grocery shopping last night and went to the back little clearance section and found full size jars marked down from $3 to $0.97! They don’t expire until December so I bought 3 :)

Another thing – I always buy the Entertainment Coupon book. We are using coupons from it this weekend to take our daughter and her cousin to the Museum, the Butterfly Center and the Planetarium all on buy one, get one free coupons! That book pays for itself after about two uses.

I’m pretty much a Tabasco junkie. I noticed there was a coupon on my egg carton for 75 cents off any Tabasco product so I peeled it off and tossed it in a drawer. Each of the next two times I went to Kroger, the same coupon spit out of the little dispenser. So now I had 3 and was very happy because my favorite product of theirs is this smokey chipotle sauce they have that is $4 a bottle. I grumble every time I go buy it because of that. So now I have 3 bottles of it that were $9.75 instead of $12. It’s hard to feel good about something when you know the truth is you didn’t get a deal, you just didn’t get screwed as bad.

Hello BluSky! Ahhh–but you love the sauce, so think of it as a good buy:).

Man, I’m late! I needed something to hold my earrings. Instead of buying a jewelry box (or something) for $10, I bought a frame from Goodwill for $.75, painted it, attached cross-stitch fabric to it, and attached wire to the back. Now, I have an “earring frame” that hangs right above my dresser for about $3.

    Hello AgLee16!

That is so random–I am working on something extremely similar. I saw it in RealSimple magazine, and it seems like such a great idea!

    Thanks for sharing.
