Frugal Confessions – Frugal Living

Hello Frugal Confessions Readers!

Here is my frugal confession of the week:

I drive state vehicles in the course of my work, and because of this, I have to take a driver safety course once every three years. The beauty of this is that it is free to me, and most auto insurance companies will offer a discount on your personal car insurance for doing so. I was hoping for a 10% discount from the course I took a week ago, but was pleasantly surprised when my insurance company instead gave me an 18% discount on our car insurance!! This is a savings of roughly $400 a year for us. Woohoo!

What is your confession of the week? I’d love to hear it!

We had an office potluck a few days ago. I didn’t participate, mainly because of my diet (but also because it saved me $10-15)

Does a potluck dish cost that much?? I guess because it is to feed a lot of people.

Thanks for sharing!

That’s a great savings. Congratulations! As for my confession, I’m afraid I don’t have anything interesting to report. Maybe I’ll have something next week.

Hi Anthony!

Thank you. I think if you make a mental note to be more frugal, or to have a confession each week, you might just save yourself more money. Everyone could use that!

Great job! I found a pair of shoes on the clearance rack at DSW that I had already picked out from the “regular” racks. Coupled with my rewards certificate I paid $25 for a $60 pair of dress shoes!

Way to go Michelle!

I still have never been to a DSW. Would you recommend them?

DSW is usually my first stop for almost all of my shoes. Sometimes I find something, sometimes I don’t. It just really depends on if I’m looking for something in particular or just in general. They carry several big name brands and their price points are anywhere from $20 to $200. Selection varies a little by location so if you don’t see something you want in one store, try another. Plus their stock usually rotates quickly so new shoes are constantly coming in. The majority of the stores are focused on women’s shoes, but we usually have decent luck finding casual shoes (slip ons, sandals, etc) for my husband’s size 13 feet.

It’s a self-service concept (vs waiting on a salesperson to bring them out to you like at Macy’s & Dillard’s) but there are usually several employees working the floor. They also carry purses, wallets, and socks. They have a rewards program that sends you certificates based on how much you’ve spent.

Scott & I are going on a date tonight using a LivingSocial deal to a restaurant close to my parents house (bonus: free babysitting ;)), woohoo! I also heard the tip somewhere to sign up for groupon/living social alerts for other cities if you know you’ll be traveling there in the near future, which I thought was a great idea.

Nice save on the car insurance! Mrs. MMD bought all our nieces and nephews tee-shirts, dresses, and candy for Easter. Everything was on sale!

My Frugal confession of the week? Getting a corporate discount on the gym I want a membership to, but having them give me a 7 day trial run anyway so I can save on that week of dues. i was going to join them anyway, but it was nice to get that free week of membership :)

Yay! Have fun with your new gym membership. Do they have a sauna? I love those things.
