Frugal Confessions Friday – Frugal Living

Hello Frugal Confessions Readers!
For those of you new to this series, check out the introduction here.
Here is my confession of the week:
I am a member of Cashbaq, a site that offers money back for making purchases at a ton of different sites. I only buy rock-bottom bargains online, and so the cash back is not much, but it is worth it to score great deals such as a free 2009 Entertainment book (after cash rebate), and a $3.21 turtleneck from Land’s End. I just received my second payout of $11.83 automatically to my paypal account! Hurrah!
What is your frugal confession? I’d love to hear it!

I had never heard of Cashbaq, but I use a similar site called Ebates. I love getting the occasional check back too! I just got about $11 back about a month ago
My confession: I was looking at advertisement for 50% off frames at a local store and thinking that I would finally get around to buying a new frame for this beautiful old map of southern Italy that my grandparents gave me (an auction find for them that was sitting in their basement until I discovered it and hinted at how much I would love it!). I love the map, however the frame was literally crumbling apart, and now that we have our hallway painted I’m more than ready to finally put it on display. I mentioned that I’d be going to buy a new frame to my husband and he said “Oh, why don’t I make a frame since we already have the glass from the old one?” At that moment I said a silent little thank you to the heavens that I married a man that is good with tools and DIY home projects (now if I could just get him to work faster…;) haha!). We picked up $13 worth of beautiful oak that is now a frame and just needs to be stained and sealed, both of which we have around the house leftover from other projects. I can’t wait to hang it up, and knowing it cost less than $15 makes it even more lovely to me!!

Hey Aurora–
That is awesome. Way to go Scott–frames are so expensive.
That is so funny about the old Italy map as decoration; I just came up with an ideas (okay…while antiquing with my husband) to take old postcards and make decorations out of them. They are so charming! They will probably go in our library….

I was also going to talk about ebates! I still have to buy textbooks (yay, grad school!). If I bought new from my campus bookstore, I would have paid $332.75 for all of my books (this is a little low as I already have two of my required books), and if I bought used, I still would have paid $233.05. Instead, I went through ebates (half.com and barnesandnoble.com) and Paperback swap and spent $183.10. Combine that with the cash back I’ll receive and I paid $172.36 including shipping! That’s 26% off the used price and 51% off new!
