Frugal Confessions Friday – Frugal Living

Hello Frugal Confessions Readers!

Here is my confession of the week:

About two and a half years ago I scored a great deal at Kroger’s for Purex concentrated laundry detergent (four bottles for $1.46). We actually just ran out of it all about two months ago, and after spending $5.00 on a bottle of laundry detergent at the store I decided that enough was enough. So I made my own!

For about $8.00 worth of ingredients (I have enough ingredients leftover to make another half batch), I was able to make enough laundry detergent to last our household an estimated 9 months. I am keeping track of how long it lasts by knowing that we do two loads per week (and 1-2 extra loads per month), and recording the starting date on the reused box with a marker. It smells good, and more importantly, so does the laundry! Also, I am so happy to get rid of some of the chemicals that come in store-bought laundry detergent. Win-win here. Thank you Cindy for showing me the recipe you started using!

04/24/2013 Update: I am about to use the last detergent, which means that this $8.00 batch lasted us for a whopping 8 months! Amazing!

What is your confession of the week? I’d love to hear it!

  • Wow that’s great! We spend a ton on detergent. We have to buy a new bottle nearly every month.

  • Nice job! Have you noticed any difference at all in your clothes when using store bought detergent and then your homemade detergent? If it really is the same, I may need to think about doing this myself!

I know I’m late getting this confession in, but I think it’s a good one! I had purchased 2 different online deals over the past couple months for Starbucks e-gift cards (paid $5 for a $10 card!). But I had been a little bummed about the fact that I had built up a rewards status on another Starbucks gift card I kept in my wallet that allowed me to get free soy & flavors — was there a way I could get those benefits using the discounted e-gift cards I purchased online? turns out YES! I was so excited to discover that if I logged into my rewards account online that my gift card was registered with, I could transfer the balance of any new gift cards I received onto the gift card I had built up rewards on. SCORE!! And so many soy pumpkin spice lattes have followed :)

Score!! I think you can also get free WiFi with a gift card, right? As long as you keep the account open?
