Frugal Confessions Friday – Frugal Living
Posted on | August 6, 2010 | 9 Comments
Hello Frugal Confessions Readers!
For those of you new to this series, check out the introduction here.
Here is my confession of the week:
I just cleaned out our closets and made our mid-year donations to a women’s domestic abuse shelter in Houston, as well as a Goodwill near our home. Using ItsDeductible, I was able to estimate that my efforts are worth $252 in tax savings! Woohoo!
Remember, if you are looking for a tax deduction you need to make sure the charity you are donating to is approved by the federal government. Also, ask the charity for a receipt, and only donate items that are in “good” condition.
What is your frugal confession of the week? I’d love to hear it!

I already mentioned this at the Chron, but I always ask myself if I could make whatever it is I want. Could I make those sunglasses? Or those earrings? Would it be cheaper?
For the wedding I’m going to this weekend, I made 3 flower bobby pins for about $3 total. In an accessory shop, they would have been at least $10. Similarly, I like sunglasses with sparkles. I bought a pair for $5 on sale at Kohls and put my own sparkles on. No one could tell the difference!

I have been waiting all week for “confessions” to post this because I forgot to last week
The 26th was my fiance’s b-day. We love to cook, but I wanted to take him out to eat that day. I found a coupon on the back of my grocery receipt for our fave little breakfast buffet place by us for buy one buffet, get one half off so breakfast here we come! It just so happened to be Pei-Wei’s birthday too and they had sent out a coupon for 2 entrees for $10 and we LOVE it there so that was his birthday lunch. So, I got to treat him to breakfast and lunch out – which is something we never, ever do, but was a really nice treat!
Also, we are in the middle of redoing the decor for the kitchen and I have been agonizing over what theme. We walked in Steinmart on Tuesday and there it was! Lime green, red, orange and yellow – all in a beautiful vase. What made it even better is I went into Marshalls on Wednesday and found the same vase for $5 less so guess what is going back to Steinmart!
Have an awesome Friday!

I’m putting off new pants this year since I’m losing about 3 pounds a week right now. I don’t want to buy new clothes until I’m at least stable-ish for a few weeks. I look a little shoddy since everything is loose, but I figure that I’m saving a minimum of $40 on slacks and $20 on shirts that would only fit for about a month anyway. My husband thinks I’m being cheap, but I think it’s on the line…

Hello Angela!
Thank you for sharing–that is great you could treat your husband out twice. Today is Paul’s birthday–he is now 30. Wow!!!

Hello Crystal! I guess as long as you have something to wear:). And I understand–that would stink to spend good money on new clothing but then continue to lose. Thank you for sharing!

Awesome! I just cleaned our house out too! Some friends were holding a garage sale to raise money for their adoption. So I got nothing out of it, but I was able to help, which I love!!! And soon another Dallas blogger is having another clothes swap!

Oh and my frugal confession – when I was traveling this last week, I took advantage of the overpacked plane, changed flights, and got a $300 travel voucher! Woot woot!

Hello Thankfully Thrifty!
Good for you–I have wanted to do that in the past, but didn’t. I always thought it was a great deal if you didn’t have a particular time you needed to be home. Any plans on where you would like to go with your voucher?
