Frugal Confessions Friday – Frugal Living

Hello Frugal Confessions Readers!
For those of you new to this series, check out the introduction here.
Here is my confession of the week:
It’s been over two years since I took Lyla to the vet (that’s the first confession). Now that we have Danny Boy, we had to get him vaccinated and neutered. On Friday of last week I put Lyla in our Sherpa, and Danny Boy in the carrier I borrowed from my friend Helen (thanks Helen!) and we headed over to SNAP for vaccinations, de-fleaing, worming, and surgery…oh my.
After checking with several veterinarians, I found that SNAP’s wellness clinic was about half of the price. Danny Boy was neutered (the poor man), tested for feline leukemia, given a set of vaccines that included rabies, feline distemper and feline leukemia, pain medication to take home with us, a dose of Frontline, a Capstar, and we purchased non-scoopable litter while his wound heals. Lyla was given an office exam (chub-chub is 1.5 pounds over weight!), rabies/distemper/feline leukemia vaccination, a Frontline dosage, and a Capstar which almost immediately kills all fleas and other things on your pets. We also left with 3 months worth of Frontline doses for the two of them.
I ended up spending $319. If I had gone with the cheapest of the other clinics on that chart, I would have paid at least 40% more (and don’t worry, this clinic uses anesthesia and is nice and clean and everything–I would not have skimped if it was not safe or if it would have hurt my animals).
What is your frugal confession of the week? I’d love to hear it!

Ooooh I wish I didn’t have allergies or else I would definitely have a cat by now!
My confession is kind of funny because it involves the dress I wore to your wedding
I recently did a big clean out of closets (still not done-but made great progress!) and decided that after many, MANY years of keeping all my formal gowns from high school proms and christmas formals it was time to give up on the idea that I would EVER wear these dresses again (in fairness I did get a second or third wearing out of the one princess-y prom gown to dress up as a princess on Halloween to hand out candy). I also had the lovely bridesmaid gown that I had recently worn to your wedding in the collection. As I was packing up the gowns to be donated, I suddenly thought about all the other weddings that were probably taking place this summer and how many other people were likely buying this same exact gown to wear once, and then it occurred to me that it might be a good candidate to try selling on eBay, and hurrah! Wouldn’t you know it sold and I got $20 out of it. I still feel good about donating all the other gowns, and I was able to recoup some of the cost of the bridesmaid gown

blasted allergies!!!
Great job on recouping some costs:). One of my donations this round includes the gown I wore in your wedding!! Hahahahaha. I figured it was time, and someone could use it for a prom or something.
Thanks for sharing:)

Now I have to check out SNAP’s…
Anyway, my frugal confession is that I pad my Pug’s diet. His vegetarian food is $45 for a 16 pound bag, so instead of feeding him 1 1/2 cups that he could probably handle, I feed him the one cup that my vet said should be the minimum and supplement it with frozen green beans and bananas and carrots. It makes the bag last longer and he usually gets the cheapest veggies I bought that we ended up not using (like we ate out unexpectedly, so he got the apple I had already cut up).

Also if you have a PetSmart with Banfield vet attached, they have “Wellness hours” T and Th 2-4 PM, meaning if you are just going for a check up or vaccines, the visit is free. You just pay for shots. Also I’ve found 1800-PetMeds to be cheaper than buying at the vet because there are always discount codes.

Hey Amanda, my Pug is allergic to meat, dairy, soy, wheat, and corn…and something airborne that we haven’t figured out yet. That’s why he’s on special food. We’ve spent $1500 in less than a year trying to get him better (tests and meds for major infections caused by allergies, licking, and scratching)…I have a full post about it at LiveRealNow dot net this Wednesday…unexpected expenses…sheesh.

Oh, I should mention he’s 99% better now and just needs eye drops, special food, and Prednizone from here on out, so the $1500 was just for getting him better…hopefully we are done with that part now and just have to deal with the $400 a year for maintenance.
