Frugal Confessions Friday!!
Posted on | March 26, 2010 | 8 Comments
Hello Frugal Confessions Readers!
For those of you new to this series, check out the introduction here.
Here is my confession of the week:
This week I used something very cheap from my household to solve a problem instead of buying something for the problem: salt. We have very tall weeds growing up from the cracks on the pavement right in front of our house. So, I pulled the weeds out, and poured salt into the cracks, figuring that no plant can survive that sort of salinity. I guess time will prove whether or not I am correct! It also beats putting chemicals onto the soil.
What is your confession of the week? I’d love to hear it!

I save the grocery receipts around the time we need our cars inspected since there always seems to be a $5 off coupon somewhere around our house. Since they all have to charge $39.95, I love these coupons!

Great site! Very interesting stuff. It’s fascinating how some people will do extreme things to save money…or lose it.
My “confession”, so to speak, is actually about a friend’s behavior. And yes, it was really a friend!
This friend, with whom I am still acquainted, had some very frugal habits back in college about 20 years ago. I could go on and on about the interesting things this guy did.
One that I will share now regarded how he purchased gas at the station. He would always pay in cash, but would always make sure that he stopped the pump when he was $0.01 over a whole dollar amount. For example, instead of stopping at $10.00, he would stop at $10.01. Then, he would pay $10.00 in cash and take a penny out of the little dish at the register – you know, the one where you take one if you happen to be short. Well, he planned to be short.
He would stop for gas twice a week, partially fill up, and rotate gas stations so they wouldn’t catch on. The stations were close to each other and on his normal drive, so it didn’t take him out of his way to do this. His thought was that if he filled up 2 times per week, over the course of the year it would give him $1.04 in free gas. At that time, way back when, that would actually buy you a gallon. So, his thought was that for very little effort he could get a free gallon of gas over the course of the year.
Does that cross the line from being frugal to being a bit nuts? Maybe! As a grown adult, I can’t imagine doing that.
Interestingly, this guy has done very well for himself since then – financially and otherwise.

Budgeting in the Fun Stuff: Great idea–I didn’t know those coupons could be found on grocery store receipts, so I will certainly keep my eyes out.
Squirrelers: Welcome, and thank you! Hahahaha–great story by the way, so thank you for sharing. Did you read mine about squirrels (in the topic section under A Frugal Story). I just so happen to LOVE squirrels….

Since you mentioned it, I just now searched your topic section and found your two articles mentioning squirrels. Both good, and I especially liked your second one as I can totally relate! You can probably tell, by the Squirrelers name:)
Great to meet another with similar thoughts. I’ll be sure to check out your site more often, the confessions seem like especially good stuff!

Your confession inspired my confession! We have used vinegar to kill weeds growing in the cracks of our pavement, the only thing is they have come back after some time and we re-spray them. But I agree about not wanting to buy a more toxic (and expensive!) weed killer. I’ve also tried a vinegar/water mix to clean counters and glass but for me the vinegar smell was too unpleasant to keep using it. I tried soaking some rosemary from our garden in the solution, which did help, but I still went back to using my Mrs. Meyers counter spray (I use both peppermint and basil scents), which I love!

Ooohhh–I love the scent of Peppermint. That is crazy that the plants grew back after vinegar!!! I will have to see how long the weeds keep away from the salt.
Thanks for your confession:).

I was frugal by accident. I was shopping in HEB again, this time for a frozen pizza. They have one there that I love that is actually not bad for you. Anyway, while I was looking them over to see if they had any new offerings I saw a coupon for a free box of Central Market’s organic microwave popcorn that is normally $2.50 if I bought a certain pizza. This pizza cost the same as the one I went in for so I picked it up and got the popcorn too. Then I did the same thing a couple of days later so now I’m stocked up on popcorn for awhile.
