Frugal Confessions Friday!!

Hello Frugal Confessions Readers! Happy Friday.

For those of you new to this series, check out the introduction here.

Here is my confession of the week:

Since the weather has turned absolutely beautiful down here over the last two weeks (in Houston), we have turned off our heat/cooling system and opened up the windows instead, and turned the temperature on our water heater down. We are getting a lot of bugs (mosquitoes, anyone?) in our home because I love to keep the back door open throughout the day when I am home and get in fresh air, so I have priced a screen door for just $32 at the local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store!! True, there are only maybe two months out of the year when the humidity and heat combo have not set in, and when it’s not too chilly, that we can keep the doors and windows open, but to me it’s completely worth it. Now I just need to get my measuring tape out….

What are your frugal confessions? I’d love to hear them!

I also LOVE opening up doors and windows to get fresh air in the house! Especially after winter it feels so good to get the stale dry winter air out and fresh spring air in.

My confession is that I recently discovered I could use True Value coupons at Home Depot! I knew they took competitor coupons from places like Lowes, however I guess I thought since True Value was a smaller hardware store that it may not work. For some reason recently I decided I had nothing to lose by asking. Our local True Value sends us $5 off $25 coupons all the time, and we almost never used them because they either don’t have what we need or its typically more expensive anyway. Now I know to use them at Home Depot rather then throw them out, which I had been doing all these months!

Here’s a funny one that doesn’t save me much at all, but I do it anyway…I brush my teeth in the shower to save water. It probably saves me about a penny a day, but it makes me feel less wasteful.

Hahaha–I used to do that because I felt like I was killing two birds with one stone. You have to wonder though…does it elongate your shower, thus using more water?

That is one thing I really miss about living at the beach. Most of my windows faced North or South so I could open them all and have a wonderful breeze blowing through the house all day and night when the weather was nice. I leave my windows open as often as I can here too but it’s just not the same.

I did manage to score a deal at HEB a couple of days ago. I was out of parmesan and while I was looking over the options at their cheese counter, I spied a display sort of out in the middle that had some of their coupons taped all over it. So I went over and it was for a free 9 oz package of a fresh pasta they sell if you bought a pound of the parmesan. So I bought that and picked up a package of cheese ravioli (normally $4.99)that was awesome and free :)

I actually take shorter showers now that brush my teeth too. :-)

I used to get into the shower and just stand there trying to wake up for a little bit (pouting). Now that I actually have my somewhat awake mind on a task (brushing), I waste less time just standing there and brooding.

My showers take 2/3 the time…but this probably won’t work for anyone who wasn’t already wasting time by feeling grumpy… :-)
