Frugal Confessions Friday!!

Hello Frugal Confessions Readers!
For those of you new to this series, check out the introduction here.
Here is my confession of the week:
For our wedding registry with Macy’s, Paul and I took the extra time to sign up for a Macy’s card. Why did we do this? It’s because after all was said and done, we would get a gift card in the mail for 5% of the value of gifts bought from our registry that we could then use on whatever we’d like. Well, it paid off. This week we received a free gift card from Macy’s with $31 on it, and we’ll be canceling the card. Hurrah! Paul needs some new clothes, so I think we will be spending on that.
What is your frugal confession of the week? I’d love to hear it!

If the card doesn’t have an annual fee why cancel it?

We’re still working our way through gift cards from Christmas. It’s nice to know that if I need a new blouse for work, I have free-for-me Kohl’s money in my wallet.

I have confession but there’s nothing frugal about it. I drive by Niko Niko’s frequently and have been wanting to try it so I stopped in last night half starved to get dinner to go. Bad idea. It was $29! It’s hard to enjoy a meal when you feel personally violated ya know?

I finally feel like I have a frugal confession for this week! (I had a couple week drought, have really been too busy to think about saving money. I’ve even been slacking on coupons, eek!)… but anyway, a few months ago I had noticed our DSL internet service went up $2 per month to $30.99. I went online to the web-chat customer service where they offered me $26.99 per month and that was they best they could do from web customer service, but if I wanted I could try calling the 800 number. So, thinking I might be able to do a little better, I called verizon today to try to get a better rate and was able to get a $6/month discount to $24.99 per month! I did have to commit to a year contract, but we weren’t planning on changing anytime soon anyway. $72/year savings. Woohoo!

Hello Evan!
I just like to keep things simple–I don’t like too many cards in my wallet:). We have two credit cards that we use for all of our purchases each month, and pay them off before the grace period is up. Why keep a third card around?
Thanks for visiting!

My frugal confession is a lesson on not always trusting the price of store brand to actually be cheaper than the name brand. We went to Office Max to get ink (to print out table number cards and wedding programs) and it appeared that the store brand ink was $2 cheaper, but when you examined the box it was also 4 milliliters less! So the unit price of the name brand ink was actually cheaper than the store brand. Silly marketers trying to trick us into spending more. Good thing my fiancé is very detailed oriented and thought to read the box.
By the way Amanda, Niko Niko is awesome!!! The price might be steep but the portions are big, so you can always consider sharing, if you can agree on something.

First of all I love your stuff! We have very similar mindsets!
Also you’ll love this… for our wedding (almost three years ago! My how time goes by!) we also registered at Macy’s. Several of our parents’ friends went to Macy’s and saw our china pattern but then bought it elsewhere. So we ended up with lots of extra china! So we returned what we could to Macy’s. (Thanks for their awesome return policy!) And then saved that gift card. When we moved into our house a year later, the money from the returned china, plus a few Macy’s wedding gift cards, turned out to be enough to buy us a new mattress! We totally hit the jackpot! Never would I ever spend $1200 on a mattress. But we didn’t have an extra $500+ in cash to spend, so why not get it free? Love that!
