Frugal Confessions Friday

Happy Friday Frugal Confessions Readers! If you are new to this series, check out the intro here.
Here is mine for the week:
The previous owners of our home left a cloth shower curtain (as well as the plastic inside one; we used that as covering for the carpet during painting in the last few weeks). If you’ve been reading my blog lately, you have seen that we are a little strapped for cash after buying this home, so I decided that the outside cloth curtain would be salvageable for the guest bathroom upstairs (Mom is in town visiting!). I put it in the wash…then the dryer…and it shrunk pretty well! Determined to not spend anymore money at stores this week, instead of buying a proper one, I lowered the shower bar about four inches so that the cloth shower curtain would look semi-normal and go over the lip of the tub. I guess I learned my lesson–don’t dry cloth shower curtains!
Now it’s time for you all to share your frugal confessions of this week or previous weeks! I can’t wait to read them.

We use two foam mats to give us padding while working in the kitchen. Well, they only seem to last for about a year before getting dirty and worn out (sticking to the floor and tearing a little if water ever gets between them and the floor). Instead of throwing them away, I clean them and cut them into rectangles the size of our dog cage in the car. It keeps our dogs from slipping around while we drive and lasts another year before we throw them out.

Haha, I never would have imagined it would shrink that much! Along those same lines, when we had a sliding glass door installed in our dining room I purchased a large curtain for it at a yard sale for pocket change. Its a good quality heavy material in solid navy blue, but I noticed that the hem at the bottom was coming apart, however it was nothing my sewing machine couldn’t quickly handle. Unfortunately I realized when I got it home that it was about 3 or 4 inches shorter than we’d need. But rather than purchase a new one I decided to head over to the fabric store, where I picked out a pretty navy and white paisley pattern for a few dollars, which I then attached to the bottom of the curtain. I love the end result, and that I could never have found it in a store!

Oh…I save the old plastic shower curtains for drop clothes too!
Today’s confession: This morning, I went to the Acme market because they had roast beef on sale for $7.99/lb. I’ve been wanting to make hot roast beef sandwiches for dinner this whole week. But, when I walked past the meat dept, I noticed London broils on sale for $1.88/lb! I bought a two pack for $9.55. One just finished cooking in the oven and the other one went into the freezer for dinner on another night. I couldn’t bring myself to spend so much money at the deli counter when it takes no time to make it myself for so much less!

Momma J, Look for an electric food slicer at garage sales or go online. We buy london broils all the time, cook them, let them cool and slice them very thin. Better than deli!
