Living in Houston on the Cheap is not difficult if you know where to look. I’d like to share some of the deals and discounts I have found in the past two years with you.

  • Houston Zoo: The first Tuesday of every month from 2:00 until closing is free!
  • Williams Sonoma: Offers free cooking technique classes so call your local store (thanks to Thankfully Thrifty for this deal)
  • $25 Pickup of Old Refrigerator/Freezers/AC units: Call 1-800-414-5072, or go online at jacoinc.net to schedule a pickup, and earn $25 in the process!
  • Discount Pet Care – SNAP Clinic is open to the general public with prices for vaccines, spay/neuter, and flea control at about half of what you will find at other veterinarians. SNAP Mobile unit is open to those with low income households for free or severely discounted services.
  • Free Energy Audits—If you are a Reliant Energy Customer, you can call for a free energy audit. However, if you are not, call the FreeLightingCorp and put yourself on a list for a free energy audit. These guys will also weatherize part of your home for free, and possibly do some other odds and ends. Depending on your income, you may qualify for free insulation.
  • Discount Appliances—Check out both Sear’s Scratch ‘n’ Dent store on 5901 Griggs Rd. (where we bought our stainless steel refrigerator at half off) and Conn’s Clearance Center at Rte. 610 and Stella.
  • Household Needs—Have you checked out the Habitat for Humanity ReStore off of Rte. 610 and Wayside? I was very happy with what a found, which includes our large adobe planters in our back yards for only $30.00, and screen doors at half the price I’ve seen elsewhere.  
  • Movies—Join the Studio Movie Grill movie club because they periodically send out two tickets to free movies and screenings!
  • Cheap Massage: Schedule a 1-hour $29 Intern Massage at the Memorial Hermann Wellness Center
